Why would I get a referral?
Common reasons: location change, travel plans, scheduling conflicts, or wanting to finish open water dives at a different dive site.
How long is a referral valid?
The PADI Open water referral is valid for 6 months from the referral date, but we do recommend that you try to complete the open water dives within 2-3 months of completing the pool training sessions so that all of your training is still fresh.
What paperwork do I receive?
A signed PADI Referral listing completed modules and instructor signatures—bring this to the completing dive centre.
Can I switch instructors or dive centres?
Yes. Any PADI dive centre/Instructor can accept a valid referral and complete your open water dives.
Do I need to redo knowledge or pool skills?
Usually not if fully signed off; the completing instructor may review or ask you to redo specific skills if needed for safety, and to check that you can still remember what you need to do to complete your course.
Are there extra fees at the completing dive centre?
Possibly—fees may include boat dives, rental equipment, training fees, insurance, or certification processing. Ask the completing centre for pricing.
What should I bring to the completing dive center?
Referral form, logbook (if any dives logged), ID, medical questionnaire/fitness-to-dive form (if required), certification paperwork, and personal gear or rental payment.
How many open water dives are required to finish?
Four open water dives are required to complete the PADI Open Water course.
How and when do I get my certification?
After successful completion of the open water dives, the completing dive centre/instructor will process your certification. You’ll usually receive an electronic (eCard) certification.
