We returned to Capernwray at the end of July for our second teaching visit of the year, it having proved an excellent venue for the younger trainee divers at the school. Lily Owen was back, this time looking to complete her Drysuit course, and she was joined by 10 year old Jack Timson, who having completed his open water pool work was ready to head into open water.
Capernwray is generally blessed with clear blue water giving excellent visibility, which combined with its shelf gently sloping from around 2 to 12 metres populated by attractions, it’s perfect for the Junior Open Water course. Coupled with the fantastic fish life that are well used to divers, instructors Jon and Den felt buoyed with optimism for a great weekend diving with the kids!
There is however always one factor you can’t control - the Great British weather! From a diving point of view day 1 passed without a hitch, but it was not such a pleasant experience for our non divers acting as surface support. Wendy and Jack’s parents Michelle and Clark were absolutely soaked to the skin due to a day long downpour - certainly a day when being in the water proved the better option! Nevertheless they bore it with a smile and at the end of the day everyone met up for a well earned meal to celebrate the days successes.
Day 2 dawned and the weather smiled - in fact today sunscreen became a necessity. Having been soaked through to the skin yesterday, Michelle actually ended up with sunburn on her head! However the diving again passed without a hitch and at the end of the day we had a newly qualified Junior Open Water Diver plus a new Dry Suit Diver! Well done kids and well done Jon and Den for their hard work.
