PADI Emergency First Response (EFR)

The PADI Emergency First Response course is suitable for divers and non-divers and gives you the confidence to respond calmly and effectively in a medical emergency.
PADI EFR independent learning
After booking, you’ll receive access to the PADI Emergency First Response learning programme. Complete the theory and knowledge reviews online at your own pace before attending the practical training.
The independent learning covers:
- Assessing an emergency situation safely
- Protecting yourself and others from further harm
- Contacting and communicating with emergency services
- Responding to an unresponsive person
- Performing CPR
- Using an automated external defibrillator, or AED
- Managing choking
- Controlling serious bleeding
- Recognising and responding to shock
- Providing first aid for injuries and illness
- Managing burns, fractures, sprains and other conditions
- Creating and following an emergency action plan
Completing the independent learning before the practical session allows you to focus on developing and applying your skills with instructor guidance.
Practical training
The course includes instructor-led practical training in a supportive, realistic learning environment. You’ll practise essential emergency-response skills using CPR manikins, AED training equipment and scenario-based exercises.
During the training, you’ll practise:
- Assessing an emergency and making the area safe
- Checking an unresponsive person
- Performing effective CPR
- Using an AED trainer
- Responding to choking
- Controlling serious bleeding
- Managing shock
- Providing first aid for common injuries and medical conditions
- Communicating with emergency services and bystanders
- Applying your skills in realistic emergency scenarios
The training focuses on prevention, personal safety, clear communication and providing appropriate care until professional medical help arrives.

Requirements
There are no diving prerequisites, and previous first-aid experience is not required. The course is suitable for divers and non-divers aged 12 and over.
You should be physically able to kneel beside a CPR manikin and take part in practical skills training. Please let us know before booking if you have any medical, physical or accessibility requirements so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
You’ll also need to complete the required medical questionnaire. Medical clearance may be necessary depending on your answers. A current EFR or equivalent CPR and First Aid qualification is required for the PADI Rescue Diver course. EFR training is generally renewed every 24 months to keep your skills current.
What to bring
No specialist equipment is required. We provide the CPR manikins, AED training equipment and other materials needed for the course.
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to kneel and move safely during practical exercises. You may also wish to bring water, a notebook and any personal protective equipment you prefer to use.
Booking
After booking, we’ll email two or three available date options within two to three working days. Dates are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Training dates and locations may be changed if venue availability, instructor requirements or safety considerations make this necessary. Any changes will be discussed with you in advance.
